The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) was originally developed by the UK government. It has become the most widely accepted framework for implementing best practice IT Service Management (ITSM) leading to its adoption in many organisations in the UK and overseas. 

Version 2 of ITIL consolidated the knowledge that had developed since its inception and focusses on the practicalities of managing IT in the production environment.

2007 saw ITIL undergoing a refresh and Version 3 was launched. Version 3 extends the scope and breadth of Service Management by considering service from the outset and recognising the Service Lifecycle from the strategy to its ongoing management.

ITIL is supported by, and works with, the International Standards Organisation Standard for IT Service Management (ISO20000).
